Would you choose to go out in the middle of the night and mix with cold, aggressive or drunk people? Well, that’s exactly what Street Pastors choose to do, although this description by no means describes all pubbers and clubbers out on the town. However, for those that need support and care, there are many encouraging stories about Street Pastors who are watching out for the wellbeing of those out and about on Friday and Saturday nights.
What's more, it's happening on the streets around us – with Street Pastors in Southampton, Eastleigh and Fair Oak – and potentially street pastors will soon be working in other localities too. So, how did it all start? The recently released book "Street Pastors" is written by Les Isaac with Rosalind Davies. In 2003, Les Isaac set up a small group of Christians to go out onto the streets of Brixton, little realising that there would today be more than 125 teams serving throughout the UK. The book describes the foundation and development of Street Pastors, their work with other agencies, the amazing power of prayer which undergirds this work and the response from people on the streets to God’s love in action.
Do buy the book and read the big picture... it's an inspiring account and sure to encourage you that positive things are happening to bring God’s love and care to the streets of our towns and cities. Then, why not contact Southampton Street Pastors (or your local group) and find out what’s happening on your doorstep, so to speak. How are people helped safely home? What about lost keys/mobile phones? When do Street Pastors give first aid? Why do they carry fruit pastilles, a dustpan & brush and flip flops?
